Match summarySaturday, 8 MarchOKI Jubilee Stadium Newtown 40: 8 tries, 4 goals Central-Charlestown 244 tries, 4 goals The Newtown Jets completed their 2008 trials program with a 40-24 win over Newcastle club side Central-Charlestown at the OKI Jubilee Stadium on Saturday. Newtown led 22-6 at half-time and 40-6 after 60 minutes, but turned on a lacklustre final quarter as the Central-Charlestown Butcher Boys piled on an unanswered three converted tries. Now it's down to business for the Newtown JetsNew Zealand internationals Sam Perrett and Iosia Soliola were both named to play for Newtown but Perrett delayed his comeback on the recommendation of the Sydney Roosters rehab staff. Soliola played confidently and did enough to remind the Roosters coaching staff that he is ready and available for NRL duty. Jets coach Greg Matterson once again shuffled through a large number of players on the day and faces the enviable task of having to narrow down his full complement of fit and in-form players to the final 17 who will turn out for Newtown in the opening competition round. A new competition, a new challengeThe Newtown Jets will enter the inaugural season of the NSWRL NSW Cup competition (the NRL's reserve grade in NSW) with cautious optimism after recording four consecutive wins in the pre-season trials program. The Jets opening competition game in the club's centenary year is against Cronulla-Sutherland next Saturday, 15 March, at the OKI Jubilee Stadium, formerly Kogarah Oval - the match is timed to start at 4.30pm. Newtown represented well in Centenary tribute exhibitionNewtown supporters are reminded that their old club is prominently represented in the Centenary of Rugby League tribute exhibition, currently on show up until 28 March at the NSW Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney. Viewing times are Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm. Club members and supporters are encouraged to see this historic display of club memorabilia from the NSWRL 1908 foundation clubs. Some information about the Central-Charlestown clubThe Central-Charlestown RLFC dates back to 1910 - the original Central Newcastle club was one of the foundation clubs of the strong Newcastle Rugby League competition. The club relocated from the inner-city in the early 1960's and became Central-Charlestown, popularly known within the Newcastle Rugby League fraternity as "The Butcher Boys". The club has produced some great Rugby League names in its 98-year history including Wally Prigg, Clive Churchill, Bobby Banks, Ken and Keith Maddison and Timana Tahu.
