Here’s a blast from the past with particular relevance to this Saturday. The Jets defeated North Sydney at North Sydney Oval on the night of Friday, 18th May 2007. Jamie Soward was Newtown’s team captain and is pictured here holding the Frank Hyde Shield. Eleven years later Jamie will be part of the Channel Nine broadcast team at Henson Park on Saturday covering another Newtown-Norths match. Photo: Mike Biboudis Photography.

It’s Newtown versus North Sydney in the Frank Hyde Shield at Henson Park on Saturday – and kick-off is at 1.00pm!

The Jets and the Bears meet in the first leg of the 2018 Frank Hyde Shield series at Henson Park on Saturday, and please note that the kick-off is at 1.00pm. The earlier kick-off time is because the match is being televised live on Channel Nine. In fact it’s the first free to air telecast of a Newtown Jets home game at Henson Park since 1982. We hope a huge crowd attends on Saturday to show off one of our famous Henson Park home game occasions in a positive manner – and please tell anyone else who is going about the kick-off being at 1.00pm!

NSWRL Intrust Super Premiership NSW – Round Nine

Saturday, 5th May 2018

Henson Park

Newtown (8 points, 7th place) v North Sydney (8 points, 8th place)

Both teams are clinging to a place in the top eight and Saturday’s match is of great importance to both clubs.

Newtown’s team is:

Will Kennedy, Matthew Evans, Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga, Reubenn Rennie, Sione Katoa, Jack A. Williams, Kyle Flanagan, Braden Uele, Blayke Brailey, Wesley Lolo, Briton Nikora, Anthony Moraitis, Jack Williams.

Interchange: Jaimin Jolliffe, Addison Demetriou, Billy Magoulias, Daniel Vasquez.

Coach: Greg Matterson.

North Sydney:

Viliami Kaveinga, Mawene Hiroti, Braidon Burns, Jacob Gagan, Amanaki Veamatahau, Connor Tracey, Dean Hawkins, Samuel Johnstone, Robbie Farah, Vincent Leuluai, Tarquinn Alatipi-Butler, Hymel Hunt, Kyle Turner.

The clash between the hookers on Saturday will be a fascinating encounter. North Sydney’s Robbie Farah is a vastly experienced NRL and representative rugby league campaigner, who made his NRL debut back in 2003. Newtown’s Blayke Brailey is without doubt one of the brightest young talents to play for the Jets in a long time. Come along and see this showdown happen live at Henson Park this Saturday.

Please note there will be half price entry and a free Frank Hyde Shield stubby holder (while stocks last) to everyone who gets to Henson Park on Saturday prior to 12 noon.

Immediately following the Jets-Bears showdown at Henson Park on Saturday, the undefeated Glebe-Burwood Wolves take on Hills District in a 5th round Ron Massey Cup fixture at 3.00pm. Just reminding everyone that the Glebe-Burwood Wolves (or the Glebe Dirty Reds) are Newtown’s partnership club in the 2018 Ron Massey Cup competition.

Newtown Jets clothing and merchandise will be on sale at Henson Park this Saturday. You can of course buy online on: www.newtownjetsclothing.com.au or you can call direct on (02) 9052 6980.

Newtown Jets memberships for 2018 are most assuredly still available. Check out this link for the necessary information:  http://www.newtownjets.com/jets-membership-2018/

Newtown Jets club Director Jeff Gabriel has well and truly gazumped last week’s quiz information about Newtown’s biggest ever win in any grade. Jeff has ascertained that the Newtown Jets defeated Woy Woy 84-14 in a NSWRL Jim Beam Cup competition match at Henson Park in 2004. Trevor Schodel was the team coach and we are still searching for all the scorers’ details. Jeff’s information and memory are absolutely right – those are the correct match details.
