A fitting setting for a unique occasion
It is entirely appropriate that our annual season launch should once again be conducted at the palatial premises of one of our most generous sponsors, our very good friends at the Petersham RSL Club.
And what a special occasion this is - the official season launch in what is Newtown's 100th year as a Rugby League club - and a club that certainly has packed into the past one hundred years so many moments of raw courage, triumph, drama, pathos and intrigue.
Above everything else, the Newtown RLFC story is characterised by our club's fierce drive and determination to survive as a sporting and community entity.
Newtown's annual season launch also serves to commemorate the contribution of this club of our former long-term Patron, a man who was a legend in both Newtown circles and in Australian Federal politics, the late Fred Daly MHR.
Great slate of speakers and special guests, auctions, raffles, special prizes
In recognition of our club's Centenary, the theme for this year's launch is "Newtown through the Ages". While the greats of Newtown's formative years are no longer with us, there will be a line-up of high profile Bluebags and Jets identities from the 1940's through to the modern era who will recount a wealth of Newtown anecdotes from their time in the game and their own association with this old club.
There will also be a high quality audiovisual presentation surveying Newtown's 100 years as a Rugby League club, which also encompasses Newtown's role in the major changes that have swept through our society in the past century. This is a very fine joint production by our most meticulous of club historians Terry Williams and our technologically-savvy Director of Operations Stuart McCarthy.
Introduction to our 2008 players
In keeping with the Centenary slogan of the Australian Rugby League - Saluting the past, Celebrating the Present and Inspiring the Future - we will be introducing the players who will be wearing Newtown's proud colours in this our Centenary season.
These young men will be maintaining the traditions of the giants of the past and will also represent the Newtown club in the inaugural year of the newly-named flagship competition of the NSW Rugby League, the New South Wales Cup.
Many of these young fellows have great careers ahead of them - this 2008 season would well be the year that propels them into higher levels of achievement in our professional game.
Our launch can also be seen as a public demonstration of the success of our ongoing partnership with one of the most successful and professionally-administered organisations in Australian sporting circles - the famous Sydney Roosters RLFC. The partnership is now in its third year and continues to strengthen.
