The Newtown Jets gave their season renewed momentum with a solid 38-10 win over Manly-Warringah at Brookvale Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets scored four tries in the first half and led 20-4 at half-time. They added three more tries in the third quarter to lead 38-4 but the Sea Eagles, who had come into this match on the back of some quality performances, kept Newtown at bay for the remainder of the game.

Wingers star in first half

Newtown's first half tries came through doubles to acrobatic wingers Paul Rokolati and Usaia O'Sullivan. Both wingers have developed intelligent partnerships with Jets halfback Ryley Jacks, whose accurate corner kicks provide these flankmen the chance to out-jump their opposite numbers and either score or tap the ball back infield to supporting team-mates.

Two of Newtown's first half tries also featured high speed and precision ball-handling that created overlaps for the wingers. The Jets enjoyed a glut of possession in the first half along with a rarely seen 10-3 advantage in the penalty count.

Jets momentum carries through into second half

The Jets snuffed out any hopes of a Sea Eagles revival by scoring two quick tries early in the second half.

Fullback Henare Wells ran a great angle for his try, while five-eighth and captain Ben Jones scored his two tries from close to the line. Overall Newtown had around 60% of possession for the game and registered about 70% completions over the span of the match.

Player performances

The Jets coaching staff said that it was always pleasing to come away with an emphatic win at a venue where Newtown hasn't fared particularly well in recent seasons.

Overall Newtown's defensive effort was solid and one of Manly's two tries came from a kick rather than directly through the Jets defence. Newtown's big forwards played a major role in asserting control and letting the backs take advantage of the sustained possession at Manly's end of the field.

Best forwards for the Jets were Lama Tasi, Dylan Napa and Tinirau Arona, while young backs O'Sullivan, Jacks and Wells had their best games so far this season.
