Following its refurbishment, Petersham RSL Newtown has established itself as a thumping live venue with a variety of artists coming through, not to mention the abundance of comedians hitting the level two stage.
Tuesdays groove, and there's everything from pool comps to karaoke throughout the week.
Membership for those in the area is just $2, and the late closing time means the Town Hall and Zanzibar no longer have the monopoly.
Informal but fun atmosphere
With padded chocolate brown walls, mirrored tables and wall features, banquettes and a welcoming bar, the club defies its roots.
Alive with music-lovers and refined retro types, the club attracts the best of the inner-west. Eccentric and grungy, but fashionably so, the crowd is made up of all shapes and sizes, reflecting its address.
The relaxed, anything-goes atmosphere means the punters are equally casual and though the interior has been revamped, the informal RSL attitude prevails.
This is a watering hole with a dash of city bar sophistication minus the pretension and wranglers and remaining true to the inclusive veteran spirit.
Something for everyone
- It's worth checking the gig guide to find out who's coming soon as the variety of acts means most tastes are fulfilled.
- There's a tapas restaurant called Muncheros open for lunch and dinner and a cocktail bar on the top floor.
- While there's no smoking in the live venue, it's a skip down the brightly lit stairwell to the main bar.
