Jets Blown Away by Raiders’ Second Half Blitz

NSWRL Knock-On Effect NSW Cup – Fourth Round

Saturday, 3rd April 2021

Raiders Belconnen Oval (Holt, ACT)

Canberra Raiders v Newtown

Kick-Off: 4.00pm.

Referee: Cameron Paddy.

Touch Judges: John Woods and Keiren Irons.

Playing surface: Excellent.

Weather: 27 degrees, sunny, clear sky.

Canberra Raiders 60 (Corey Harawira-Naera 2, Brigham Moeakiola 2, Harry Rushton, Brad Schneider, Corey Horsburgh, Leo Thompson, Kai O’Donnell, Elijah Anderson tries; Brad Schneider 10 goals) def. Newtown 20 (Luke Metcalf, Edward Aiono, Jack A. Williams, Honeti Tuha tries; Honeti Tuha, Luke Metcalf goals).

Half-Time: Canberra Raiders led 24-16.

Comments:

Newtown had trailed 18-16 and then conceded a try to the Raiders in the 39th minute, after the Jets had been penalised and put the Raiders in a strong attacking position.

The third quarter of the match was disastrous for the Jets, with the Raiders scoring converted tries in the 43rd, 49th, 53rd and 58th minutes to completely blow the game away.

By contrast Newtown didn’t add another try in the second half until Honeti Tuha scored in the 73rd minute.

Ethan Natoli worked very hard on Saturday and Bronson Garlick always looked likely to trouble the Raiders defence.

One of the prestige awards of the night is the Fred Daly Memorial Shield, which is awarded to the player considered to have rendered the most outstanding service to the Newtown RLFC on and off the field. This year's recipient is the Henson Park crowd favourite and powerhouse middle forward Brad "Big Red" Fearnley, flanked by the club President Barry Cotter (left) and the Australian Mutual Bank sponsorship executive and Development Manager Glen Warner (right).
