NEWTOWN JETS STATEMENT ON NRL BID
After Newtown Jets pulled out of the WA bid process, we were approached by the Ipswich Jets to do a joint bid for admission to the NRL.
Ipswich Jets presented an entirely different proposition to WA which includes joint control and ownership in any new NRL club. The proposed team will be called the JETS and play in Newtown colours when in NSW. Full details of the bid terms will be released at a later date.
The Newtown RLFC board has considered this ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ for Newtown to return to top-level Rugby League with an interest and equity in the new club and accordingly decided to join the bid.
The board also reaffirmed the strength of our long-standing partnership with Cronulla Sharks and acknowledged their tremendous support.
The opportunity for the JETS to receive an NRL licence is not guaranteed and will not arise again in the foreseeable future.
Regardless of whether the bid is successful or not, Newtown Jets will continue to participate in the KOE NSW Cup, playing at their spiritual home Henson Park, just as they do now.
Go the JETS…
Newtown Jets respect and honour the Traditional Custodians of the Land and pay our respects to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on the lands we meet, gather and play on and that the land area encompassing Henson Park traditionally belonged to the Gadigal people of the Eora nation.
