Newtown Jets Virtual Team List v Parramatta Wed 12th August, 2020
Welcome to Round 22 of Newtown Jets Virtual Season 2020.
While we might not be able to watch Newtown Jets games live this season we can relive past glories from years gone by. As part of Virtual Season 2020, JETS TV is broadcasting classic matches featuring our opponents from the 2020 Canterbury Cup NSW draw in “Amco Cup retro-style” on Wednesday nights at 8.00pm. Our intrepid social media team will “live tweet” the game as if they had entered a time machine and want you to be part of the action.
Thanks to a Member’s Request by Melinda Page (#89), on Wednesday, 12th August they head to the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground to bring you that classic Grand Final encounter between Newtown and Parramatta that was actually played on Sunday, 27th September, 1981.
It was the first time a Grand Final was played on a Sunday afternoon, having previously always been on Saturdays. Newtown was the Cinderella story of the NSW Rugby League. The Jets were making their first finals’ appearance since 1973 and had accounted for competition heavyweights Manly & Easts to qualify for their first premiership decider since the agony of their defeat to Souths in 1955. Parramatta meanwhile was still searching for the maiden premiership that had eluded them since 1947, having previously been denied in 1976 & 1977.
Glory awaited the victors, bitter sweetness the runners up.
So tune in at 8.00pm, Wednesday, 12th August to JETS TV www.newtownjets.com or www.facebook.com/newtownrlfc and follow us on www.twitter.com/newtownrlfc to see who triumphs.
