The Newtown Jets and the Windsor Wolves exchanged fourth and fifth place on the VB NSW Cup competition table after the Wolves' decisive 36-24 win up at Windsor on Saturday night.

The Jets turned in a strong first half performance and were the first to score when winger Pierce Sapsford broke the deadlock with his determined try in the 22nd minute. Windsor equalised soon afterwards, and then took the lead right on half-time and went into the break 12-6 to the better.

The Wolves scored early in the second half but Jets hooker Nafe Seluini ensured that Newtown remained in the contest with another of his dummy-half try specialties.

The match was very much in the balance with Windsor leading 18-12 midway through the second half, but the Wolf Pack seized control of the match with a flurry of three converted tries within the space of ten minutes. The Jets regained some respectability through two tries by second-rower Brad Barrett, bringing the full-time score to 36-24 in favour of the Wolves.

It was a good night for the respective goal-kickers, with Newtown's Chris Taripo converting all four of the Jets tries, and Fijian international Wes Naiqama improving all six of Windsor's tries, including one of his own.

General assessment

This was always going to be a tough away assignment for the Jets, with the Wolves fielding a backline full of experienced Penrith NRL players.

Newtown put in a determined team effort in the first half for little reward and the Jets bombed a couple of tries and took the wrong options on other occasions. The Wolves rubbed salt into the wound by scoring a converted try right on half-time to go in at the break with a 12-6 lead.

The Jets coaching staff observed that Newtown had regained momentum midway through the second half but a missed scoring opportunity for the Jets, followed by a penalty and crucial repeat set to the Wolves led to Windsor kicking away to a 24-12 lead.

Two more converted tries to the home team and the game was over.

Player performances

Newtown's best players on what was indeed a hard night at the office were Brad Barrett, Josh Ailaomai, Nafe Seluini and Dylan Napa in the forwards, while Buddy Gordon and Pierce Sapsford were rated the best of the backline division.

Next game

The Jets are now in fifth place on the competition table and take on the sixth-placed Wests Tigers this Saturday, 3 August, at Henson Park at 3.00pm.

Wests Tigers are behind the Jets on points for and against differential, and Saturday's match shapes up as a critical game for both clubs as the struggle for finals places intensifies.

When last we played the Wolves...

Supporters will remember Newtown's great initiative in taking their home game against the Windsor Wolves to Parkes in 2012 and again this year in 2013. The Wolves won in 2012 but in Rd13 2013, the Jets secured a great win, 26-22.
