TheNewtown RLFC regrets to announce the passing of Manfred Moore on 11thJanuary 2020. The news of Manfred’s passing was only made known to the Newtownclub yesterday (9th March).

ManfredMoore attracted considerable publicity for his short stint in professionalrugby league with the Newtown Jets in 1977. He had previously playedprofessional American Football with the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa BayBuccaneers and Oakland Raiders. He was a member of the Oakland Raiders squadthat won the 1976 Super Bowl (Super Bowl XI) although he did not play in theFinal. After his departure from Newtown, Manfred resumed his American Footballcareer with the Minnesota Vikings.

Hisfirst game of professional rugby league was in first grade against WesternSuburbs at Henson Park on Sunday, 20th March 1977. Amazingly hescored a try in his debut match with the Jets, but he only played a furtherfour NSWRL first grade matches before returning home.

Hereturned to Sydney in late August 2007 as a guest of Newtown Jets club patronJohn Singleton to attend a Newtown Jets club function and also a Jets home gameat Henson Park.

Manfredrecalled his short spell in rugby league with mixed feelings, but he retainedgreat memories of the friendliness of the Newtown Jets supporters and otherAustralians that he met on his two visits here. His brief spell in rugby leaguefootball has become very much a part of Newtown Jets folklore.

ValeManfred Moore.
