Newcastle | Beer Footy Food Festival

The Beer Footy & Food Festival celebrates its 10th Birthday at Henson Park!

It was here a decade ago that the idea first came to life — bringing together craft beer, great food and suburban rugby league to create the kind of day out that feels like a throwback to the golden era of the game.

But as always with the Beer Footy & Food Festival, the entertainment doesn’t stop when the whistle blows.

Returning favourites Pro Wrestling Australia (PWA) will once again bring their larger-than-life ringside action to the hill, while the now-infamous Streaker Bullrush returns — the festival’s most ridiculous and hilarious spectacle, where brave (or questionable) volunteers attempt to sprint across the field while avoiding a pursuing pack of security guards.

This year’s main game will see the Newtown Jets take on the Newcastle Knights, adding another chapter to the Jets’ proud history at the ground we’ve called home since 1936.

With a huge lineup of craft brewers, street food vendors, DJs, family activities and thousands of fans expected on the hill, the 10-year celebration at Henson Park promises to be the biggest and most entertaining edition yet.

After all, when it comes to beer, footy and a proper day on the hill — Henson Park is where the Beer Footy & Food Festival began!

HENSON PARK AWAITS: STORM COMING, JETS NEED TO RISE

The Newtown Jets return to Henson Park this SUNDAY after a four-week hiatus, hanging on to fifth place by a thread. Last weekend's frustrating loss to Norths, played in difficult conditions at Bear Park, has left the Bluebags in a logjam, two points adrift from third but potentially only one slip-up away from eighth.

The good news is our Men All Dressed in Blue remain in control of their own destiny. They'll need to be at their best as they face a Melbourne Storm outfit brimming with confidence after a last-start flogging of the Bears in Tamworth.

Melbourne also claimed the Round 3 encounter against Newtown, with their crafty No. 9 Gabriel Satrick proving very difficult to contain. He's one of a litany of home-grown talents from the Storm's 2025 premiership-winning Jersey Flegg side who will line up against the Jets at Henson on Sunday.

Get there early, too. Glebe Dirty Reds take on the Wenty Magpies in the curtain raiser at 12:45pm, so you can settle in on the hill, grab a cold one and make a full afternoon of it before the main game kicks off at 3:00pm.

So, it's over to you, Bluebags faithful. All roads lead to the real eighth wonder of the world this Sunday. Get down for the curtain raiser, stay for the Storm, bring the noise, and let's help lift our team to victory.

🎉 Fun on the DEICORP Family Hill

ROYAL BLUE RISING: NEWTOWN MARCHES ON NORTH SYDNEY OVAL

All roads lead to North Sydney Oval this Sunday for the opening leg of the Frank Hyde Shield — one of the great fixtures on the rugby league calendar.

The Bears and Jets share a rare mix of fierce rivalry and deep respect as foundation clubs. Whenever these two lock horns, the occasion carries history, pride, and a little extra electricity.

Sunday’s clash shapes as another cracking encounter. Norths (3rd) and Newtown (4th) sit locked on 24 competition points, separated only by for-and-against. After a blazing start to the season, the Bears have stumbled with back-to-back losses and will be desperate to steady the ship at home.

Our Men All Dressed in Blue come in fresh off the bye, still hunting consistency. Too often this year a hard-earned W has been followed by an L. Against the Roosters we were superb for 76 minutes — flying out to a 30–0 lead — before conceding two late tries. The lesson is clear: we’ll need an 80-minute performance to take the points at Bear Park.

With form teams like the Bulldogs, Raiders, and Magpies breathing down our necks, these two points matter. A win here isn’t just a statement — it’s a stabiliser for the run home.

So, let’s go, Bluebags. Bear Park is the place to be this Sunday. Wear the royal. Bring the noise. Stand tall for the oldest club in the game.

See you there.

BLUEBAGS FALL SHORT IN AUCKLAND, EYES NOW ON ALLIANZ

The trip across the Tasman proved a bridge too far for the Newtown Jets as they fell short of securing three consecutive wins for the first time this season. Slow out of the blocks for the second week running, the Warriors jumped to an 18–0 lead after just 14 minutes.

Newtown eventually steadied, crossing twice to head into the break trailing 12–24.

The Bluebags controlled large stretches of the second half but couldn’t convert enough of their opportunities, allowing the home side to hold on for a 30–22 victory. The loss tightens the ladder, with both the Bulldogs and Warriors now sitting just two points behind the fifth-placed Jets.

This Sunday, our Men All Dressed in Blue return to Allianz Stadium for the first time since 2014, facing a Sydney Roosters outfit stinging from a heavy defeat to the Wests Magpies. The Chooks were significantly undermanned last weekend, but with the likely return of most of their NRL State of Origin representatives, they should field a far stronger line-up.

The Jets edged the Roosters 33–32 in a thriller back in Round 6 at Henson Park, so all signs point to another cracking contest between two proud foundation clubs.

We’d love to see as many of the Bluebags faithful as possible at Moore Park on Sunday to get behind the boys. Go the Jets.

BLUEBAGS CHASE THREE STRAIGHT AS THEY FACE THE DEFENDING PREMIERS

Newtown Jets head across the Tasman this weekend buoyant after consecutive home wins over the Sea Eagles and Dragons — the latter arguably their most complete performance since their Round 1 victory over the Panthers.

The Dragons came out breathing fire, racing to a 10–0 lead inside as many minutes. But our Men All Dressed in Blue clawed their way back into the contest, grinding through the middle and striking twice on the stroke of half-time to take an 18–16 lead into the sheds. Their second-half effort was just as convincing, much to the delight of the biggest Henson Park crowd of the season. Full-time: Jets 34, Dragons 22.

This Saturday, the challenge goes up another notch as they face the defending premiers on their home turf. The Warriors, currently sitting 8th, trail the 5th-placed Jets by four points and will be desperate to close the gap. With Luke Metcalf, Luke Hanson, Jett Cleary and Geronimo Doyle steering their spine — and, as always, a monster forward pack — the assignment is as tough as they come.

For Newtown, it’s a chance to make it three wins on the trot for the first time in 2026. It’s big. It’s box office. Go the Jets.

The Newtown Jets return to Henson Park this Saturday chasing back-to-back home wins, fresh off a confidence-boosting victory over the Sea Eagles. Our Men All Dressed in Blue led 30–4 after 60 minutes before Manly crossed late to narrow the margin, but the damage was already done. The Jets produced some scintillating football, thrilling the Bluebags faithful and climbing back into 5th place on the ladder.
